Course description

The Reflective Practice for IELTS Teachers Course is a professional development programme tailored for educators aiming to refine their teaching techniques and enhance student outcomes in IELTS preparation. This comprehensive course prepares participants for the Trinity College London (Level 6) Certificate for Practising IELTS Teachers.

Throughout the programme, participants will engage in dynamic activities, including video analysis, collaborative discussions, and guided academic reading. The course fosters self-reflection, experimentation with teaching methods, and professional growth, supported by a dedicated team of tutors and peer collaboration through Zoom sessions and a learning management system (LMS).

Participants will also access resources such as Modern English Teacher and English Teaching Professional journals, alongside Academic Reading Circles, to deepen their pedagogical knowledge.

Admission requirements:

Initial qualification in TEFL
1 year experience of teaching EFL
Some experience of teaching IELTS
English - minimum C1 level

Our teacher trainers:

Roisin Diamond has been teaching English for nearly ten years in Ireland and overseas. She is qualified to teach EAP, OET and IELTS and has also led CPD workshops and teacher training. She is a speaking examiner for Cambridge and a speaking and writing examiner for Oxford international group. She has recently qualified with an associate certificate in instructional design for digital courses. Roisin has codesigned this course and works at MTS as an IELTS tutor and teacher trainer as well as an Instructional Design Lead.

Emilia Jagnieża has been teaching English as a foreign language in the UK since 2003, and teaching and designing IELTS courses since 2009. She’s a DELTA qualified teacher and holds an MA in Linguistics as well as Qualified Teacher Status. She’s an expert in teaching reading for IELTS. Emilia is the Academic Manager for MTS and acts as the Course Director.

Course Objectives:

The Reflective Practice for IELTS Teachers Course is designed to guide you through reflective practice in teaching IELTS, focusing on continuous improvement and student-centered approaches. Participants follow our Experimentation and Reflection Framework to apply in their IELTS teaching practice the strategies discussed in each unit.
By the end of the course, participants will be better able to:
Reflect on teaching principles and beliefs: Examine personal teaching beliefs and their influence on classroom practices. Compare diverse teaching philosophies and explore how to align teaching methods with personal values and institutional goals for greater coherence.
Foster ongoing teacher development: Reflect on professional growth, identify strategies for continuous improvement, and address potential barriers to development. Create and maintain a reflective diary to document teaching experiences, insights, and strategies for sustained growth.
Prepare students for IELTS Speaking: Design strategies to help students confidently tackle IELTS speaking tasks. Introduce error correction techniques to balance fluency and accuracy while fostering student engagement and refining teaching approaches for improved outcomes.
Enhance students' IELTS Listening skills: Address common challenges in the IELTS Listening exam with tailored strategies to improve comprehension and performance. Trial innovative methods to build students' listening skills and refine teaching practices for better results.
Support students in IELTS Reading success: Develop personalised strategies to overcome challenges in the IELTS Reading paper, focusing on time management, vocabulary building, and reading comprehension. Implement flipped learning techniques to maximise classroom time and promote student independence.
Guide students in IELTS Writing mastery: Experiment with innovative writing activities and collect feedback to improve lesson effectiveness. Focus on enhancing students' performance in IELTS Writing tasks through reflective teaching practices and strategic refinements.

Graduation requirements:

Participants who attend 90% of the online classes with supervisors and complete all assignments in the program will be issued a certificate. Any students who fail to meet these requirements will not be issued a certificate and no refunds will be offered.

1. Q: My IELTS certificate is expired/ I haven't taken an IELTS tests before. Am I eligible for attending the course?
A: You'll be kindly invited to take our MTS IELTS Mock Test without having to take the real IELTS test

2. Q: I am not a Vietnamese citizen. Can I join the course?
A: Absolutely. The course is open for all citizens but we can only deliver hard copies to Vietnam at no extra cost at the moment. If you are outside of Vietnam and wish to receive a hard copy, please contact us for shipping options.

3. Q: Is the Reflective Course for IELTS Teachers equivalent to TESOL/ TEFL certificate?
A: No, it is not. TESOL and TEFL certificates are to prove that one can teach English to speakers of other languages in general and is a must for anyone to be a certified teacher if their major is not Teaching English in Vietnam. Our course focuses on specific skills to deliver the best IELTS lessons. After completing this course, you are qualified to enrol the CertPT Level 6 in Teaching IELTS.

4. Q: Is the Reflective Course for IELTS Teachers accredited?
A: Yes, it is. Our course is accredited by ALAP (Awarding Language Acquisition for Professionals) which is an independent, international accreditation organisation born from decades of experience in the provision of quality assured English language education and training. 5. Q: If I can't follow the whole program, can I resume the course, transfer to another person or get a refund?
A: The course fee is only for 1 specific course and user and not transferable or refundable within 45 days of the scheduled course start date

6. Q: If I can't attend 80% of the online classes, can I still get the certificate?
A: Participants have to attend at least 80% of the online classes and complete all assignments to receive an accredited certificate. Otherwise, participants have to pay for another course to rejoin the program.

7. Q: How long will it take to receive the pdf and hard copy of the certificate?
A: Certificates will be issued within two months of the end of the course. We will contact you as soon as your certificates are available.

8. Q: How can recruiters trust the accreditation of my certificate?
A: Your certificate is issued with ALAP accreditation so your recruiters can retrieve your details based on your certificate number on the ALAP website. Recruiters can check the validity of ALAP holders using this link: https://alapuk.org/certificate-verification/

9. Q: Is there a recording in case I miss an online class?
A: Yes. Participants can access the recordings of the classes on our platform after 3-5 days of each lesson

10.Q: How often do I have to do assignments in this course?
A: Every module will have assignments which need to be completed. Your trainers will give you full instructions on the assignments.

11. Q: Will there be a graduation ceremony after I've completed the course?
A: YES!!! You will be invited to a fancy graduation ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City organised by HEW London once a year.

12. Q: Will there be any job opportunities after my graduation at HEW?
A: YES!!! We have connections with schools and language centres in Vietnam who would love to invite you for a job interview.
