Course description & objectives:
The Introduction to Teaching IELTS course is a 70-hour program designed to provide EFL teachers with foundational skills and knowledge to effectively teach IELTS. Delivered over a 4.5-month period, the program includes 30 hours of live instruction led by experienced IELTS educators and trainers, as well as 40 hours of self-guided learning.
The course begins by examining core beliefs and principles of teaching and learning, providing a structured transition from EFL teaching to IELTS preparation. It is divided into four key units, each addressing a specific aspect of IELTS instruction:
Week 1: Level testing
Week 2: Introducing the exam
Week 3: Selecting materials
Week 4: Experimentation and reflection
The final session focuses on strategies for continued professional development and long-term growth in IELTS instruction.
Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the IELTS test structure and requirements, develop effective teaching methodologies for all four components of the test, and address challenges commonly encountered by educators and learners. Practical sessions emphasise assessment, feedback, and the application of reflective practices to refine instructional approaches.
The course incorporates elements of the Reflective Practice for IELTS Teachers Course, encouraging participants to apply new concepts in their own classrooms and document their outcomes through Reflective Journals. These journals may serve as professional portfolios, valuable for sharing with colleagues, managers, or potential employers.
Additionally, participants will have access to Modern English Teacher and English Teaching Professional digital journals. Each unit includes opportunities for engagement in Academic Reading Circles, fostering deeper understanding and collaboration.
By the end of the course, participants will be better able to:

Reflect on teaching beliefs and philosophies: Explore personal teaching beliefs and their impact on classroom practices. Compare diverse teaching approaches to clarify individual teaching styles and align methods with institutional goals.

Develop skills for teaching IELTS Listening: Select and analyse diagnostic tests, create lesson plans, and introduce IELTS listening components effectively. Use strategies to address question types, adapt materials to learner needs, and refine feedback and monitoring approaches.

Enhance approaches to teaching IELTS Speaking: Evaluate diagnostic tests, introduce IELTS speaking criteria, and create lesson plans aligned with test requirements. Design authentic, level-appropriate activities, integrate technology, and balance error correction for accuracy and fluency.

Build strategies for teaching IELTS Reading: Assess reading proficiency, group students by ability, and tailor learning plans. Explain IELTS reading structure, manage timing, and provide targeted feedback to improve comprehension and performance.

Teach IELTS Writing with tailored strategies: Assess writing levels, create individualized learning plans, and teach IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2. Focus on task structure, coherence, and error correction, using reflective practice to enhance teaching methods.

Promote professional growth and reflection: Explore continuous professional development strategies, identify potential barriers, and create reflective diaries to document insights and strategies for ongoing improvement.

Admission requirements:

an initial qualification in TEFL (international TESOL, TEFL, TKT, CELTA, DELTA, CertTESOL...)

a minimum of 1 year of EFL teaching experience (proved by registrant's labour contract, payslip, employer's email...)

a proof of your English proficiency close to C1 level minimum. If the candidate lacks valid proof as mentioned, they will be invited to an online interview with IELTS examiners at MTS UK.

Our teacher trainers:

Roisin Diamond has been teaching English for nearly ten years in Ireland and overseas. She is qualified to teach EAP, OET and IELTS and has also led CPD workshops and teacher training. She is a speaking examiner for Cambridge and a speaking and writing examiner for Oxford international group. She has recently qualified with an associate certificate in instructional design for digital courses. Roisin has codesigned this course and works at MTS as an IELTS tutor and teacher trainer as well as an Instructional Design Lead.

Emilia Jagnieża has been teaching English as a foreign language in the UK since 2003, and teaching and designing IELTS courses since 2009. She’s a DELTA qualified teacher and holds an MA in Linguistics as well as Qualified Teacher Status. She’s an expert in teaching reading for IELTS. Emilia is the Academic Manager for MTS and acts as the Course Director.

Rachel Kirsch is a DELTA qualified English language teacher, teacher trainer and published materials writer working both in the U.K. and overseas. In addition, she holds an MA in Applied Linguistics. Along with Rena Basak, she has written a variety of teacher training materials and courses for a variety of ages and contexts. Rachel is an experienced English language examiner and examiner trainer.

Rena Basak is an experienced teacher and teacher trainer with over 30 years’ experience both in the UK and overseas. She is DELTA qualified and holds a diploma in ELT Management. As an EFL manager she mentored and trained teachers to teach English and other subjects. She now freelances as a teacher trainer and materials writer. She has collaborated with Rachel Kirsch on numerous projects including course design and delivery and has published teaching materials for adults and young learners worldwide. In addition, Rena is an experienced English language examiner and examiner trainer.

Participants who attend 90% of the online classes with supervisors and complete all assignments in the program will be issued a certificate. Any students who fail to meet these requirements will not be issued a certificate and no refunds will be offered.

1. Q: My IELTS certificate is expired/ I haven't taken an IELTS tests before. Am I eligible for attending the course?
A: If you can perform 4 skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing) well in English and complete your assignments at academic level, you are more than welcome to join the course. However, you will be invited to join an interview with IELTS examiners at MTS UK
2. Q: I am not a Vietnamese citizen. Can I join the course?
A: Absolutely. The course is open for all citizens but we can only deliver hard copies to Vietnam at no extra cost at the moment. If you are outside of Vietnam and wish to receive a hard copy, please contact us for shipping options.
3. Q: Is the IELTS Teacher Training Certificate equivalent to TESOL/ TEFL certificate?
A: No, it is not. TESOL and TEFL certificates are to prove that one can teach English to speakers of other languages in general and is a must for anyone to be a certified teacher if their major is not Teaching English in Vietnam. Our course focuses on specific skills to deliver the best IELTS lessons. After completing this course, you are qualified to enrol the CertPT Level 6 in Teaching IELTS.
4. Q: Is the IELTS Teacher Training Certificate accredited?
A: Yes, it is. Our course is accredited by ALAP (Awarding Language Acquisition for Professionals) which is an independent, international accreditation organisation born from decades of experience in the provision of quality assured English language education and training. 5. Q: If I can't follow the whole program, can I resume the course, transfer to another person or get a refund?
A: The course fee is only for 1 specific course and user and not transferable or refundable within 45 days of the scheduled course start date
6. Q: If I can't attend 90% of the online classes, can I still get the certificate?
A: Participants have to attend at least 90% of the online classes and complete all assignments to receive an accredited certificate. Otherwise, participants have to pay for another course to rejoin the program.
7. Q: How long will it take to receive the pdf and hard copy of the certificate?
A: Certificates will be issued within two months of the end of the course. We will contact you as soon as your certificates are available.
8. Q: How can recruiters trust the accreditation of my certificate?
A: Your certificate is issued with ALAP accreditation so your recruiters can retrieve your details based on your certificate number on the ALAP website. Recruiters can check the validity of ALAP holders using this link: https://alapuk.org/certificate-verification/
9. Q: Is there a recording in case I miss an online class?
A: Yes. Participants can access the recordings of the classes on our platform after 3-5 days of each lesson
10.Q: How often do I have to do assignments in this course?
A: Every module will have assignments which need to be completed. Your trainers will give you full instructions on the assignments.
11. Q: Will there be a graduation ceremony after I've completed the course?
A: YES!!! You will be invited to a fancy graduation ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City organised by HEW London once a year.
